WOMEN LIVING WITH DISABILITY HAVE CONFRIMED THAT DISABILITY ISNT INABILITY-MAKING A LIVING FROM WEEVING AND BEADS WORK

Ndumberi Kirathimo Disable Self Help Group comprises of women living with disability and was registered in 2010 in Kiambu Constituency Kiambu County. The members came together to support to each other. The group has a drive which states that they will not sit back to wait for donations, but use the strength of mind and hands to work.

They received a first loan from Women Enterprise Fund of ksh 50,000 in 2012 and used the half of the proceeds to purchase chairs for hire and the other half was put in art and craft project. The project was primarily on ‘ciondos’ and beads work. The second loan of Ksh 100,000 was in 2014 which the group used to increase/expand their businesses and bought sewing machines to take advantage of those with the skills in weaving and beads work. They were also able to advance soft loans to members who have space to start small businesses. The 3rd loan of ksh.200, 000 was used to expand their projects. Despite being physically challenged, the group has demonstrated that they can use their skills to earn instead of depending on well-wishers. Every member has a business activity born from the group, and is able to bring some earnings to the house. According to the words of the chairlady, they are not waiting for a visitor to come with an envelope of cash to donate, but come and buy their products.
